Dept. of Sociology, NBBGC celebrates World Environment Day 2025

The Department of Sociology celebrated the World Environment Day 2025 with the global theme of ‘End Plastic Pollution’. Around 100 students from the Department under the supervision of two faculty members, Dr. Nancy C. Lhasungpa and Dr. Kunsang O. Bhutia, participated in the Himalayan Cleanup campaign under Zero Waste Himalaya and Integrated Mountain Initiative. The segregation of collected waste by brand and audit of the same was undertaken at Deorali Chorten Complex by college students along with volunteers from Deorali Girls High Secondary School (DGHSS) and local monks.

The clean-up started at 8:45 am with a plantation drive by H.E. The Governor, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, and Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Gangtok. The clean-up exercise ended at 12:45 pm, and the brand audit was recorded and uploaded for further action. On World Environment Day, our students took the pledge to fight one of the greatest threats to our planet: plastic pollution.

The Himalayan Cleanup is the biggest campaign for collective action against plastic pollution. Students got an opportunity to understand the value of time and effort, instill values of community building as well as to get an idea of volunteer work.
