The Department of Mathematics at Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College (NBBGC), Tadong, in collaboration with the Sikkim Mathematical Society, celebrated International Pi Day on 27th March 2025 (as 14th March 2025 was a public holiday) with great enthusiasm and academic fervor. The event united students, faculty, and esteemed guests in a dynamic showcase of mathematical curiosity and excellence. The program began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Kshittiz Chettri, the event's coordinator, followed by an address from the Principal, Dr. D. Purohit. He shared his experience of teaching mathematics for over three decades and provided valuable suggestions. Dr.Prawesh Sharma highlighted the key moments of the program, while Mr. Pradeep Sharma delivered the vote of thanks. The event was skillfully moderated by Mr. Prasant Dahal. The occasion was graced by the Dean, Senior Administrative Officer, Heads of various departments, faculty members from the college and other institutes, as well as students from NBBGC and various other colleges.A major highlight of the event was the Invited Talks, delivered by two distinguished speakers: Dr.Ripan Saha from Raiganj University and Dr. Alok Kumar from Sikkim University. Their insightful and thought-provoking sessions captivated the audience, enriching the academic discussions of the day. In addition to the lectures, student seminars were held at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, featuring enthusiastic participation from students of Sikkim University, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, SGC Rhenock, and NBBGC Tadong. The objective of the student seminar was to provide them with a platform to showcase their research and innovation.
The seminars highlighted the students' research interests, mathematical insights, and communication skills. Rajeswari Sharma from Sikkim University and Arpan Sharma from NBBGC emerged as the winners in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate categories, respectively. Dr. Hom Nath Luitel and Mr. Jiwan Dahal were the judges for the event. At the end of the seminar, the judges gave valuable feedback to improve the presentation. Two engaging competitions: a mathematics quiz and a pi-digit recitation contest added a competitive and fun element to the event. Monalisa Giri, a 4th-semester Math Honours student from NBBGC, emerged as the winner, impressively reciting Pi to 147 digits! As part of the celebration, the Department of Mathematics took the opportunity to recognize and honour students for their exceptional achievements in prestigious mathematics competitions. Ms. Sarita Gautam was congratulated for her outstanding performance in the Madhava Mathematics Competition. At the same time, Mr. Diwakar Bhattarai and Mr. Sudarson Sharma were acknowledged for their success in the recent IIT JAM examination. The event was a tremendous success, underscoring the growing mathematical culture in the region and reaffirming the department's dedication to academic excellence, collaboration, and the holistic development of students.
