On 25th November 2025, Department of Education NBBGC, organised an awareness programme on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) for the benefit of students of Ist, IIIrd and Vth Semester from Education Honours. Ms. Sarmila Rai, Health Educator and Ms. Sarita Basnett, Counselor, Health Dept., Govt. of Sikkim were invited as resource persons. Ms. Rai disseminated elaborate knowledge among the students with regard to STIs, it’s causes, types, symptoms, long term effects and prevention. Ms. Sarita Basnett delivered a talk on the mental, emotional and physical health hazards that teenage physical relationships could harbour.
The programme was highly interactive as the students were eager to receive new knowledge on topics they generally feel awkward to discuss about. They made inquiries about various issues related to their reproductive, sexual and mental health. Through the use of audio-visual aids while delivering their content, the resource persons were able to sustain the focus of students for a long time. Further, narration of real-life events related to the negative effects of STIs on human lives, made a deep impact among the students, encouraging of good genital hygiene practices and discouraging irresponsible sexual behaviour. Resource persons also shared their contact numbers and email addresses with the students incase they needed help regarding matters related to their genital health.
