The Department of Microbiology, NBBGC, Tadong, Sikkim, in collaboration with the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI), celebrated ‘International Microorganism Day’ on 17th September 2026. The programme was organised under the theme \u201cSmall Organisms: A Huge Impact\u201d, with the broader message of \u201cExploring Microbes for a Healthier People, Planet and Future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The programme aimed to create awareness about the diversity and importance of microorganisms and their contributions to human health, food, agriculture, environmental sustainability and everyday life. It also provided students with an opportunity to communicate scientific knowledge through posters, displays and awareness activities.<\/p>\n

The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) D. Purohit, Principal, NBBGC, Tadong and Mr. Munna Pradhan, Sr. Administrative Officer. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Mingma T. Sherpa, HoD, Department of Microbiology, NBBGC and highlighted the significance of celebrating International Microorganism Day. This was followed by a brief introduction to the programme and the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI) by Dr. Pramila Koirala, Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, NBBGC and State President, MBSI. The Principal, Prof. (Dr.) D. Purohit, addressed the gathering and appreciated the efforts of the Department of Microbiology in organizing the event that connects microbiological knowledge with issues of contemporary relevance. His address emphasized the importance of scientific awareness among students and encouraged them to understand the role of microorganisms beyond their traditional association with disease, recognizing their beneficial roles in food, health, agriculture and the environment. The Sr. Administrative Officer, Mr. Munna Pradhan, in his address encouraged students to actively participate in academic and awareness activities and to develop greater interest in scientific learning.<\/p>\n

As part of the celebration, awareness activities were organised to communicate important microbiological concepts in a simple and engaging manner. The student gave the awareness talk on the topics; antibiotic resistance and responsible antibiotic use, HPV vaccination and preventive health awareness, importance of proper hand washing and hygiene and drink butter milk for better gut health. The programme also had traditional fermented food display section, which highlighted the close relationship between microorganisms, food traditions and local cultural practices. Students also participated enthusiastically in poster presentations focusing on contemporary microbiological and environmental themes such as sustainable environment, sustainable agriculture, gut microbiome and antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n

The programme was also attended by Vice Principal, NBBGC, Prof. (Dr.) Jiban Upadhayaya, Faculty members from other departments, administrative staff and students. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Ranjan Kaushal Tirwa, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, NBBGC, Tadong and State Coordinator, MBSI.<\/p>\n
